Hearing Support Unit (HSU)
The Hearing Support Unit (HSU) at KSPS is a specialised educational setting designed to support students who are deaf or hard of hearing. The HSU provides tailored assistance to enhance students’ access to the curriculum and promote their academic, social, and communication development.
Supports available include personalised teaching strategies, use of assistive hearing technologies, speech and language therapy, and individual or small group sessions to develop listening and communication skills.
The unit also fosters inclusive participation by collaborating with classroom teachers, families, and allied health professionals to create a supportive learning environment.
To access enrolment into the HSU, families typically undergo a referral process involving an educational assessment and audiological reports confirming the student's hearing loss.
Applications are submitted through Student Services and reviewed by the Department of Education, which considers the student’s individual needs and the capacity of the unit to provide appropriate support.
Once approved, enrolment into the HSU is coordinated to ensure a smooth transition and tailored educational planning for the student.
